LED lights are the latest technology in energy efficient lighting. LED stands for ‘Light Emitting Diode’, a semiconductor device that converts electricity into light unlike old fashioned incandescent light bulbs that passed electricity through a filament. LED lamps are the future of lighting as they use up to 90% less energy compared to incandescent and halogen lamps. They also last longer and unlike regular energy-saving bulbs, they are instantly bright when switched on. This production of light method is also different from regular energy-saver bulbs, which pass energy through mercury vapour to create UV light, which is then absorbed by a phosphor coating inside the lamp, causing it to glow
The sale of traditional incandescent lamps have now almost been discontinued in Australia due to energy saving requirements introduced by the Australian Government. The LED market has been saturated with inferior LED products due to the ease of purchasing products online. In most cases these are cheap in price and quality and not suitable for commercial environments. Many will claim 15 year life expectancy but fail to mention that this is based on 1 hour use per day (example only)
Depending on the circumstances, LED Lamps may not be beneficial to a clients site, hence our Technicians will only recommend LED lamps/fittings if there is definitely benefit unlike some companies who may only wish to make a quick sale and not care about the client long term needs .
CLS only use quality LED products supplied through world wide reputable lighting manufacturing companies with warranties and back up servicing and will only recommend the best for your site.
Quick LED Sum Up
- LEDs are the most energy-efficient bulbs. For example, a 7 watt LED 12 volt Downlight Lamp can replace a 50 watt Downlight Halogen lamp and have a brightness output that is similar with up to an 43 watt energy saving
- They use 90% less energy than traditional incandescents. Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) – energy-saver bulb – use 60%- 80% less than incandescents and halogens use 20-30% less.
- Many LEDs can sometimes pay for themselves through energy savings in just a couple of months.
- LEDs have a longer life span – depending on which one you buy and how you use it.
- LEDs give out their light almost instantly when you flick the light switch, so you don’t have to put up with dim light while they warm up
- Tests have found that LED and halogen bulbs work fine in low temperatures, whereas CFLs do not
- Some types do not come all colour ranges
- To be able to dim LED lights you may need to upgrade to your dimmer that recognises low electrical loads. The Technicians from CLS will be able advise whether a selected LED lamp are dimmable. Upgrading of dimmer systems may be required by a qualified Electrician
